After being worked tirelessly by Himmelstoss, Paul’s platoon leader, he and his friend want some revenge on him. Haie, one of his friend knows the path that Himmelstoss take from the pub he goes to. They go and hide behind a rock and wait for Himmelstoss to come. They late see him walking down the path half drunk. They wait and finally ambush him. They cover his head and start whipping him. This was enjoyable for Paul and his friends. They finally got back at Himmelstoss. Also in the chapter, new recruits show up to the base they are at. Paul and his friends feel like “stoneage veterans” because they have been at war longer than them. At one point in the chapter, Kat, using his “sixth sense” finds warm bread and deer meat to feed his friends. They end up cooking the meat and eating the bread, this is one of the greatest meals they have had in awhile compared to what they normally eat. This chapter told me about what life is like for them. They are lucky enough to find even more food, thought Kat probably stole it from someone or somewhere. This chapter really showed me how tough life could be as a soldier. You had to struggle to stay alive because sometimes you would not get enough food or people of higher rank would be hoarding it for themselves. As a soldier you would also have to put up with the obnoxious officers and you would have to do everything they say.
Overall, I didn’t enjoy this chapter. There were some good parts, but mostly I did not enjoy it. The chapter did not appeal to me like the first two chapters did and I just didn’t like it. There was no part in the book were something big really happend. It had some big parts like how Kat got the food for his friends and how they beat up Himmelstoss, It seemed like Paul and his friends did very little when they were behind the front. It was an easy read, and the vocabulary was not much of a challenge. There was nothing very interesting about the chapter accept the part where they beat up Himmelstoss, I did not really learn anything from the chapter. This chapter mostly talked about what their life was like behind the front and how they managed to survive. I personally felt bad for Himmelstoss because he was beaten pretty bad but at the same time I felt like he deserved it because of how he treated Paul and his friends.
