The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, copyright 2008, is a book about teenagers forced to fight to the death in an arena, while millions of people watch it for entertainment. This is a Science fiction novel about the future, the world has went through a huge war, and North America has turned into a new nation called Panem. Their capital is called “ The Capitol.” The Capitol is lead by a corrupt leader named President Snow. He hires a game maker who creates the Hunger Games terrain each year. Each year, the terrain of the Hunger Games is always different. Overall, the theme of the book is hope, throughout the whole book when Katniss, the main character, if full of doubt she still never loses hope.
The story is told through Katniss’s eyes. Every battle seen, every inch of the story is told through her eyes. The plot of this book is surviving the Hunger Games and winning. She has to survive with a huge disadvantage against all the other contestants. It appears the appropriate aged reader of this book would be about 12- 18 year olds. I believe this because of the fighting scenes because some of them are a bit graphic and it is and overall violent book. I think the biggest factor that I liked about the book was that it was through her eyes, I kept me engaged throughout the whole book because of that. I believe that her writing style was effective because how she writes and how descriptive she is.
“ The only thing stronger than fear is hope”
- President Snow
There is nothing stronger than hope. In the book, Katniss never loses hope, no matter what situation she's in, she is always hopeful. Katniss is always hopeful that she will win the Hunger Games for Primrose and she will survive. She goes through a lot in the arena, she loses her friend Rue, almost loses Peeta, and have been close to death several times, but she still never lost hope. While she was in the cave with Peeta, she had hope that Peeta would survive and that she would survive and return to Primrose. :
“ The only thing stronger that fear is hope”
- President Snow, The Hunger Games, from the movie.
Katniss is one of the strongest characters I have ever read about. She is full of hope that she will survive. When I was still reading the book, I was hoping that her and Peeta would survive. every second of the book kept me in suspense. I learned from the book that hope, is key to survival. Without hope, Katniss could have easily died in the first day because she had no goal to work towards. What I mean my goal is that Katniss promised Primrose that she would return back to her. I strongly believe that hope kept her alive. For Katniss, her hope allowed her to beat the odds of her perishing in the Hunger Games.
The book affected me a lot. I tought me to be happy with what I have because Katniss did not have a lot of things I have and always have hope. Hope fuels your energy to live. I had mixed emotions throughout the book. When Rue died, I was sad because she was my favorite character, when Cato died, I was happy because he had tried to kill Katniss down several times, but he got a taste of his own medicine and was happy at the end because Katniss and Peeta both survived. This whole book is not like the world we live in, I don’t think this will ever happen, but if the world goes to nuclear war, there is a possibility that this could actually happen, but probably modified in a way. I can a lot of authors probably going to write books like this and I can see myself liking them too.
If you are looking for a book that has action, and a little romance, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins would be the perfect book for you.
